On April 10, St. Paul Education hosted a sod turning ceremony to celebrate the start of construction on the new École Mallaig School, joined by local dignitaries, staff, students, and community members. The event marked a major milestone in the long-awaited project, which will see the construction of a new facility to serve Mallaig area students for years to come.
Remarks were shared by MLA Glenn van Dijken, Deputy Reeve Maxine Fodness, and Board Chair Sylvie Smyl, who spoke to the importance of rural education and investing in future generations.
Other special guests in attendance included trustees, faith leaders, school council representatives, project partners, members of the media, and Central Office staff.
“This project represents more than just a building — it’s a commitment to our students, staff, and the future of learning in Mallaig,” said Kellie Handford, Principal of École Mallaig School. “We are so thankful to our community and partners for their continued support.”
“Today’s sod turning is a symbol of progress and partnership,” said Sylvie Smyl, Chair of the St. Paul Education Board of Trustees. “This new school will be a place where students can learn, grow, and thrive — and we’re proud to support a project that reflects the needs and dreams of the Mallaig community.”
Construction on the new school is now underway.
