The Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) celebrated the achievements of nine exceptional students at the 2025 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Student Award ceremony, held at Government House in Edmonton. Among the recipients was Harper Matthews, a Grade 11 student from New Myrnam School, recognized for remarkable personal growth, determination, and leadership.
St. Paul Education is extremely proud to have a student from our Division recognized with this prestigious provincial award. Harper’s accomplishment is a testament to the strength, resilience, and potential of our students and the support they receive from school staff, families, and their communities.
Harper serves as a true ambassador, consistently taking initiative in projects that challenge the norm and drive meaningful change. Her involvement in the Net Zero Tiny Home project and the Sustainable Poultry initiative highlights not only her leadership and hands-on contribution, but also her maturity and forward-thinking mindset. Harper understands that strong communities are built on meaningful relationships, and she actively cultivates those connections within the school. Her enthusiasm, dedication, and strong work ethic make her a role model among her peers—an inspiring presence who leads by example and elevates those around her.
Selected by their school community, each recipient demonstrated outstanding development in skills that have led to both academic and personal success. Harper’s story stood out as an inspiring example of resilience and initiative.
“Receiving the ASBA Lieutenant Governor Award has motivated me to keep striving for excellence and giving back to my community," Harper shared. "This recognition has strengthened my commitment to learning and leadership. I’m extremely grateful for the experiences that shaped me and the people who have supported and who continue to encourage me throughout all my journeys!"
Principal Danielle Eriksen reflected on the significance of the award:
“Having a student from New Myrnam School recognized with the ASBA Lieutenant Governor Student Award is an incredible honour for our entire school community. It reflects the strength of character, resilience, and leadership that we strive to nurture in all our students. This recognition not only celebrates the individual achievements of one remarkable student, but also highlights the collective efforts of our dedicated staff, supportive families, and the culture of excellence and care that defines our school. It’s a proud moment that reaffirms our commitment to empowering students to grow into compassionate, capable, and community-minded individuals."
The celebration included remarks from Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, ASBA President Marilyn Dennis, and Maria Ochoa Franklin, a 2024 award recipient.
Congratulations to Harper and all award recipients on this well-deserved recognition!
